National Foot Health Month: Watch Your Step!

National Foot Health Awareness Month

Most people take for granted all the work our feet do for them, but failing to take proper care of your feet has consequences: Approximately 20% of Americans experience foot problems every year.

That’s one reason the American Podiatric Medical Association designated April as National Foot Health Awareness Month. Reminding people to pay attention to their feet can make a big difference in not only quality of life but also their overall health.

At Ankle & Foot Centers of America, we believe in preventive care strategies such as routine foot checkups, proper footwear, and hygiene. Awareness is an important first step in dealing with foot health before some conditions prevent you from participating in regular physical activities.

As our CEO Dr. Joseph Giovinco puts it: “Your feet are the foundation of your body. When you take care of them, you’re taking care of your overall health. Foot Health Awareness Month is a great time to remind people that preventive care and early treatment can help them stay active and pain-free.”

How To Take Care of Your Feet

How to Take Care of Your FeetPeople often ignore pain and discomfort until it affects their mobility and daily comfort. Better foot health include:

  • Keeping your feet clean with a daily shower or bath
  • After showering or bathing, patting your feet dry with a towel to remove any residual dampness
  • Moisturizing to prevent dry, cracked skin
  • Checking feet daily for changes, especially for diabetics
  • Checking for arthritis-related stiffness or any other sudden changes in your feet
  • Wearing properly fitted and supportive shoes, not too tight or loose, that support the natural arch of your foot
  • Stretching and strengthening foot muscles to prevent injuries
  • Regularly trimming your nails
  • Wearing socks with your shoes
  • Maintaining a healthy routine with daily walks or regular workouts to keep the blood circulating to your feet

Foot Health Awareness MonthIt is also important to get an annual checkup from a podiatrist, who can help manage conditions like bunions, plantar fasciitis, and diabetic foot complications.  Think of a routine foot exam as part of your early intervention against conditions such as heel pain, arthritis, and neuropathy that can limit your mobility. If you suffer from chronic conditions like diabetes or arthritis, you are at a higher risk of foot complications.
